Two estranged twenty-somethings, OLLIE and KENNEDY, feel unfulfilled in a present-day small midwestern town. Ollie, an amatuer comedy musician with high expectations for himself, looks for an opportunity to break into the business while working as a busboy for a greasy spoon. Kennedy, abandoned by her friends and working a dead-end retail job, fruitlessly attends date after tinder date in hopes of making a connection.
After finding what he hopes is his big break in securing a paid gig at a local bar showing talent, Ollie rushes back to best friend, ALEX. Though Ollie doesn’t share his friend’s affinity for drugs and alcohol, the two are inseparable, Alex being his biggest fan and supporter. The two plan meticulously for the upcoming performance. Alex is to work the lights and record the act in hopes of putting it on the internet.
Kennedy, after a particularly awful tinder date, finds solace with her drug dealer. While he is perhaps the only one in town she has any sort of sustained relationship with, she keeps their association strictly professional. He, on the other hand, has heard all about her upcoming date with a local boy, and pries into her past with mysterious former fling, NASTE. Sensing her discomfort and dating anxiety, he offers her a Xanax, ‘on the house’.
On the night of the big performance, Ollie is a bundle of nerves while Alex is cool as a cucumber, certain of his best friend’s success. Meanwhile, Kennedy prepares for her date in the same bar Ollie is set to perform. At the last minute, she decides against taking the Xanax. Inside, Ollie begins his act - a dramatic song about a man who poops just as the lights go out in the restroom. Kennedy, alone at the table and texting her tardy date, recognizes Ollie as her childhood nextdoor neighbor. She laughs along to the ridiculous performance, though she and Alex are the only two to do so. Ollie’s confidence turns to dismay as he realizes that Alex has missed an important light cue and the bar patrons aren’t enjoying the song.
After the showing, Kennedy sits at the bar. Dismayed at being stood up, things are made worse when she spots Naste heading towards the bar. Hoping to avoid an awkward reunion, she heads to the back alley for a smoke. Taking her place at the bar, Ollie steps up to receive his payment, only to find out that what he thought was a paying gig was actually an open mic. Dejected, he too heads for the solitude of the alley.
In the alley, Ollie and Kennedy are reunited after several long years. They catch up on each other’s lives, only to find that neither really has much to report. Ollie’s aversion to drugs has him denying Kennedy’s offer of a drag from her joint, but before they can get any further, Naste walks into the alley. Kennedy hastily retreats.
In the parking lot of the bar, Kennedy is recognized by Naste, who seems oblivious to any discomfort between them. He offers a trip to a nearby sandwich shop which Kennedy hesitantly agrees to. Meanwhile, Ollie and Alex head to their mutual friend’s house for a going-away party. Feeling embarrassed about his current life situation and the impressive success of the hostess, he lies about being an accomplished comedy writer in Chicago. Across town, Kennedy and Naste sit in the car finishing their sandwiches. Not being able to take Naste’s nonchalance, Kennedy yells at him for ghosting her after the two had sex years back. This leads to a heated argument that ends with Kennedy taking the Xanax and ranting about her miserable life.
On the front porch, Alex and Ollie get into an argument while the latter eats a brownie. Alex is concerned about Ollie’s lies, while Ollie is upset that Alex messed up his light cue. Upon being told that the brownie Ollie is eating is actually filled with weed, Ollie spits out what he can and begins a panic attack. In the car, Kennedy finishes her rant and the two begin to make out. Moving things quickly to Naste’s place, about to have sex, a girl walks in and demands to know what’s going on. Realizing that Naste was about to cheat on his girlfriend with her, she runs out and breaks down on the porch.
Alex drives a now-calm Ollie home. Clearly very high, Ollie apologizes to Alex, who gives him some much needed love and life advice. Ollie walks up to his apartment, only to realize he left his keys at the party. Incredibly stoned and without a place to go, Ollie takes to wandering the streets. Driving away from Naste’s, Kennedy spots Ollie. After both admitting to having a rough night, she offers him a ride. He accepts, and after getting into the car, is informed that Kennedy is headed to Chicago. A wide smile appears on Ollie’s face.
